The keystone of CUNY’S “Decade of the Sciences” initiative, KPF’s new science campus positions the school as a world-class research institution and provides state-of-the-art facilities befitting a truly modern university.
The Advanced Science and Research Center at the Graduate Center and The City College Center for Discovery and Innovation offer a positive presence for the Harlem community and serve as a magnet for nationally and internationally recognized researchers. The influx of talent drawn to the new facility will allow CUNY to maintain its status as a premiere public university, and one which has historically sought to give back to city with over three quarters of its students remaining after graduation.
Bill Pederson:The Limitations are everything to us, the demands are what bring about our architecture, without them, there will be nothing to work with, it is very important for us to really understand, what are the aspirations about client. The inherent in this is collaboration, not just within your own team, but also the collaboration with your client.
Gillian:When we launch the decade of science, a large emphasis was on facilities, we knew that we were going to build a new science building for City Collage. But also we had this idea that we would build what we would call a CUNY-wide science building that will support science in a number of different interdisciplinary areas.
Jill:It was not just creating two buildings that were functionally serviceable for research, or even nice for research, it was about creating a science community and that’s is very much in the legacy of all of our other academic work at KPF.
Hana:The vision for this project made us really excited about developing the design together with them, because it mirrored the way we work at KPF, which is all about collaboration. The best result could be achieved both in terms of the scientific progress and in terms of our own design investigations by collaborating.
Jill:Because our design process is a comparative process, it inherently allows our clients to interact with us about the design of the building, and academic institutions are about dialogue.
Hana:As you walk down the campus from the north to the south, there is a central spine, along that spine the buildings have been positioned sort of in pairs, so we have echoed this idea and continued this pairing along the spine, and positioned our buildings so they frame the end of that culmination point of that spine which overlook towards Manhattan. As these buildings face each other, the lab bars are sort of on the other facing part, there are more orthogonal linear forms. On the interior surrounding the plaza are the more fluid spaces of the offices and the collaborative zones of the building.
Kevin:To me there is a great linkage between kind of science were doing and a kind of space we are working in. Within the ASRC the space we got, I think it really helps to promote what we trying to do instead of getting away of it. Open spaces where students all from different labs can be sitting with each other by working and sharing the expertise and the insight into problems.
Hana:The direct adjacency of lab and office space was essential, that allows for the researchers to step out of the lab sit in the more convenient comfortable space, which forces collaboration and be able to exchange ideas calmly. We created variety of spaces for collaboration. At the end of hall ways, there are round tables for informal conversations and informal meetings. The central spaces in both buildings are where the stairs and the lounges are located adjacent to each other. And done so purposely, so as you when up and down the building. You would come across fellow scientists and students might come across the faculty mate they would like to have a conversation with, perhaps it’s an unplanned meeting but it happens, perhaps that is the platform for bigger research and bigger conversation to take place in the lab. We think of these buildings as fraternal twins, they are similar in terms of their façade, their expression, and on the interior they are quite different. The Advanced Science Research Central is a lot subtler in its expression. It has tones that is more natural, textures, whereas the Center for Discovery and Innovation, it is a lot more playful dynamic, bold in its use of color.
Gillian:At one point, KPF had made this bright yellow, glass staircase, and I sort of said (you know) we can have color if you can make it not look like color in a way, and that is a huge challenge. Then what they come out is this beautiful dichromic glass that has a millions of colors but they’re so subtle as you walk through the building. And I think that was a real collaboration, and the challenge that was set forward that KPF just knocked out of the apart.
Hana:The balance between the orthogonal lab spaces and more fluid, we call them glue spaces, that was something that is very exciting to work on.
Kevin:I think the challenge is that one would have had in trying to design a building like this are that the kinds of science we are doing here are so radically different amongst the floors. Educating one shelf in five really different areas of science and then finding a way to co-located those different needs all within one building, I think that’s been very nicely done here.
David:What goes with flexibility was really the interest and being able to reconfigure labs in a rapid way at low cost as research is going to change, but what else was important about the flexibility , is that there is mutable of disciplines happening in the building. So we had to come up with a planning approach that would support wet laboratories for chemistry and biology , dry laboratories for physics where there was almost no lab bench space and things in between, and then the other aspect that really support the idea of ease of modification flexibility was developing a very robust network of laboratory utilities in the building , so they weren’t as in standard labs along the walls but they are actually up on the celling so the flexible case work that we used would be able to tie into that. Those ideas together created an environment that supported a major CUNY objective of having flexible adaptable lab space.
Kevin:It is really fundamental for me to know that this building is doing productive research in 2017 and will doing so in 27, 37, 47, even though I have no idea as to what exact needs the scientists of those times will have for physical space.
Jill:There is nothing more rewarding than to seeing your project really well loved in a way you intended it to be used, and actually what will be even better is to see what will happen over the next 5-10 years. I think it is a wonderfully flexible building and it will be great to see how it evolves in terms of its use. The ASRC project in particular is an icon for that portion of northern Manhattan in Harlem. You know there is no reason not to think that the building will enable research that will make it a difference in society.
Hana:One of the inspiring aspect of this project was the fact that this was happening here in Manhattan in Harlem , and that this was going to create a gateway to sciences for this community
Gillian:It is just fundamentally critical that people work together and collaborate across disciplines and across these areas to address some of the important issues that we have to address. I think the more we can build facilities that support that type of interaction, the better of the we will be.
